Safety TipsShareTIPS FOR DISASTER SAFETY: There are many natural disasters, including earthquakes, fires, floods, landslides, thunderstorms, and, in some states, hurricanes, tornados and volcanoes. There are also manmade disasters to contend with (e.g., blackouts or terrorism). Here are a few “all purpose” tips to help you plan ahead. Have A Plan Create a disaster preparedness plan so that everyone in your family will know what to do in the event of a fire, an earthquake or another emergency. Choose where to meet and who will serve as your out-of-area emergency contact person. Learn how local authorities will notify you during a disaster. Find out in advance which radio station, etc., will be the official source for information. Make an Emergency Kit Create a “go” kit that you can take at a moment’s notice. Include water; food (non-perishable items); a manual can opener; plastic utensils; a flashlight; a battery-powered radio and batteries; a first-aid kit; a multi-purpose tool; medications and personal hygiene items; a cell phone with charger; cash in small, assorted denominations; a blanket; a foldable umbrella; and copies of personal identification and/or important documents. You may also want to include baby supplies, pet supplies, a sleeping bag, etc. Be Prepared: Learn First Aid and CPR Since external response to disaster is rarely immediate, you’ll feel more prepared if you learn CPR and first aid. These skills can help save lives. In the words of an anonymous quotation, “Confidence and courage come from preparation and practice.” Your local Red Cross will know where classes are being given.
