HomeShareTIPS FOR HOME SAFETY Get Strong, Deadbolt Locks for your Doors and Windows If you imagine your home as a box, its doors and windows are the openings to that box. Burglars or unwanted visitors have to enter through those openings, so closing windows and locking doors as you leave your premises is a must. All entrances should have quality locks, preferably deadbolt. The stronger and more secure your locks, doors and windows are, the more difficult they will be for an intruder to penetrate. Do not think that it is safe to open your door with a chain lock in place: Chain locks can be forced open. Brighten Up Your Home Keep flashlights in several areas of the house. Check the batteries often, especially if you have kids at home. Also, purchase timers to turn on your outdoor and indoor lights automatically at various times throughout the night. This is especially useful if you are away, since the lights can fool would-be thieves into thinking the house is occupied. Do Not Leave Spare Keys in a “Hiding Place” Outside Burglars know the common hiding places for keys and you can never be sure who is watching you hide your key as you leave your home. Remember, hidden surveillance equipment is very common now and can range from sophisticated, stationary cameras to the recording features on cameras and cell phones. Just because you don’t see anyone when you look around doesn’t mean you aren’t being watched! |
